Visit to Polzeath Beach

We had a wonderful time at the beach. We found a shady spot, where the Beach Guardian taught us all about how to care for our beaches and protect the local environment.

Coastguard Visit

Today, we were visited by the Coastguard, who taught us all about staying safe at the beach and by the sea. We learnt lots of important information.

Plymouth Aquarium Visit

Year 1 and Year 2 had an amazing day exploring Plymouth Aquarium!

The children loved discovering the incredible variety of species that live in our oceans and enjoyed learning fascinating facts about the different marine animals they encountered.

During our visit, we also learnt about the importance of protecting the seas around the United Kingdom and how we can all help to care for our marine environment for future generations.

Summer 2 - Learning walls

Take a look at our Summer 2 Working Walls! These displays showcase some of the fantastic learning, ideas, and progress we have made throughout the half term. We hope you enjoy this glimpse into what we have been exploring and creating together. The children have worked incredibly hard and are very proud of all they have achieved!

Design Technology

In Design and Technology, we designed and built our own moving fairground wheels. We explored how wheel mechanisms work, carefully selected suitable materials, and constructed strong frames with rotating wheels. We also gathered feedback from others before adding colourful pods and decorations to complete and evaluate our finished creations.

Science

In Science, we have been learning about plants. This week, we explored the important job of roots and discovered the difference between tap roots and branching roots. We carefully observed both types before drawing and labelling our own diagrams.

Trip to Plymouth

We had a fantastic day visiting The Box Museum, where we learnt about Plymouth in the past and explored some interesting historical artefacts. We then enjoyed a trip to the Theatre Royal to watch The Tiger Who Came to Tea. The children thoroughly enjoyed the performance and had a wonderful day.

Computing

In Computing, we have been learning how to programme Bee-Bots. We explored how to give clear instructions to make them move in different directions and worked together to solve simple challenges. We are becoming confident programmers and fantastic problem-solvers!

Summer 2 - Theme Web

Here you’ll find an overview of all the exciting learning, experiences, and exploration happening throughout this half term. We’ve got lots planned, and we can’t wait for the children to dive in and enjoy everything coming up.

Year 1 - Maths Home Learning

This term, our maths homework will focus again on Key Instant Recall Facts (KIRFs). These are simple number facts that help children feel more confident and become quicker with their maths as they grow.

The lovely thing about KIRFs is that they can be practised anywhere — in the car, on the walk to school, or during little moments at home. Short, regular practice really does make a big difference to their confidence and progress.

Year 2 - Maths Home Learning

Summer 2

Art and Design

This term, we’ve been exploring maps in our art lessons. We started by drawing simple maps of each child’s journey to school, thinking carefully about the shapes, landmarks, and routes they know so well.

The children then used their drawings to inspire 3D map artwork, choosing different materials to bring their journeys to life. They’ve loved getting creative and experimenting with textures and layers.

Eden Project Visit

We had a wonderful day visiting the Eden Project and learning all about plants and seeds.

During our workshop, we discovered why seeds are so important and how they grow into plants. We carefully explored a seed from the outside before opening up a butter bean to look inside and learn about the different parts.

Afterwards, we planted our very own seed to take home and look after. We are excited to watch them grow over the next few weeks.

We also had great fun exploring the amazing Tropical Biome. There were so many fascinating plants and colourful flowers to spot from around the world. The warm rainforest environment made us feel as though we had travelled to a different country!

Outside learning - bees

This week, our outdoor learning focused on the fascinating world of bees. We explored why bees are so important, both to the environment and to us as humans. The children learned how bees help pollinate plants, which allows flowers, fruits, and vegetables to grow. We also talked about how bees play a vital role in keeping our ecosystems healthy.

To bring our learning to life, the children took part in a creative activity where they made their own bees using natural materials.

Science Week

This week, our class had an exciting journey learning all about space!

We began the week with a special visit from the Wonderdome. Inside the dome, we explored the planets and stars and discovered lots of fascinating facts. One of our favourites was learning that the Dog Star is the brightest star in the night sky!

As the week went on, we continued to learn more about the planets. We worked together to order them from biggest to smallest, and then from hottest to coldest. We did a fantastic job using our new knowledge.

Our big challenge of the week was to design and build a landing pod to protect an egg. We had so much fun planning, creating, and testing our designs. We were very excited to find that half of our eggs survived their landing!

Forest Friday

This week we created natural repeating pattern bracelets.

Bridging the Tamar Visit

We had a fantastic and educational visit to the Tamar Bridge Education Centre, where we discovered how bridges are designed, built, and used.

Maths

Measuring in centemeters.

Design Technology

Sewing our finger puppets.

Maths

Comparing the weights of different objects.

Sewing Skills

We have been busy practising our sewing skills and learning how to use different techniques carefully and safely.

Now it’s time to put those skills into action! We will be creating the finger puppets that we have designed, using our plans to guide us.

World Book Day

We had a fantastic time celebrating World Book Day! We began the morning with a visit to our school library, where each child chose a mystery wrapped book. Back in the classroom, we carefully looked at the clues and pictures drawn on the wrapping to see if we could guess which book was inside before opening it.

After unwrapping the books, we shared our stories with a friend and enjoyed talking about what we noticed in them. We then had a delicious breakfast together, which made the morning even more special.

For the rest of the day, we explored the story “The Gingerbread Girl.” We thought about how the story might end and shared our ideas. The children also designed their own Gingerbread Girl characters and turned their creative designs into colourful badges.

At the end of the day, we joined the whole school for a special assembly, where we shared what we had been learning and creating throughout our exciting World Book Day celebration.

Science - Which ball bounces highest?

Learning Question: Which ball bounces the highest?

In our science lesson, we explored how the properties of materials can make objects suitable for different purposes. The children carried out a comparative test to find out which ball was the bounciest!

First, we predicted which ball we thought would bounce the highest. Then we tested a range of different balls and carefully watched how high they bounced. The children recorded their observations in a simple chart and discussed why some balls bounced higher than others.

Finally, we presented our results by creating a physical bar chart, helping us to clearly see which ball bounced the highest. It was a fun investigation and helped us understand how the materials objects are made from can affect how they behave.

Fire Drill

Today we took part in a practice fire drill at school. The Fire Brigade joined us as they were carrying out a training exercise too. They spoke to us about fire safety and explained clearly what we should do if there was ever a real fire at school.

Afterwards, the children had the opportunity to ask lots of thoughtful questions and to have a close look at the fire engine! It was a fantastic learning experience for everyone.

Spring 1 Working Walls

Take a look at our Spring 1 Working Walls! These photos highlight some of the fantastic learning, ideas, and progress we’ve shared this half term. We hope you enjoy having a little glimpse into what we’ve been exploring together.

Number Day

Today we enjoyed Number Day! We read the book How Many Legs? and worked together to find out how many legs were in the story. We then designed our own creatures with different numbers of legs and used them to create our own addition sums. We used the maths skills we have been learning recently, including number bonds to 10 and doubles to 20, to help us. We even challenged ourselves to add up all the legs on each of our table groups!

Maths - Home Learning

Amazing maths home learning inspired by the book I Can Only Draw Worms! The children worked so creatively — drawing and cutting out their own worms, carefully labelling them from one to ten, and then using them to make their own addition and subtraction number sentences. What a fantastic way to explore maths through play and imagination — well done everyone!

English

In our English lessons, we have been enjoying the story Bonkers About Beetroot! Today, we explored the different characters and thought carefully about words to describe them. The children came up with lots of fantastic adjectives, which we will be using next to help us write our own character descriptions.

English - Home Learning

Inspired by the story Bonkers About Beetroot, the children were challenged to create their very own new character! They could choose to draw their idea or bring it to life using construction materials. We loved seeing their creativity, imagination, and fantastic ideas — each character was completely unique!

Science Investigation

In Science, we have been learning about how humans stay healthy and clean. We carried out an investigation using glitter to represent germs and explored how germs can spread. We then washed our hands with soap and water to see how good handwashing helps remove the glitter/germs. This helped us understand why washing our hands properly is so important for staying healthy.

Beetroot!

Today we started thinking about our new story, “Bonkers about Beetroot.” We spent some time looking carefully at real beetroots and talking about what we noticed. We looked at their colour, shape and texture. After that, we tasted the beetroot to find out what it was like to eat.

Next, we thought of lots of adjectives to describe what the beetroot looked like and what it tasted like. We used words such as purple, shiny, round, earthy, sweet, juicy and soft.

Where does Fred like to read?

Geography

This week, we have been learning all about weather and how forecasts help us to understand what the weather will be like today and in the days ahead.

The children watched a weather forecast and used weather symbols to talk about what the weather was like across the UK. They then enjoyed role playing as weather forecasters, sharing their own forecasts with the class using the correct vocabulary and symbols.

Art and Design

The children explored the technique of wool wrapping, inspired by the work of fibre artist Judith Scott. They studied her unique and expressive artworks before creating their own wool-wrapped pieces, carefully winding and layering colourful fibres to produce individual sculptures.

Science

Our learning question was: What do animals need to survive?

The cards were sorted into two groups by deciding whether each item was:

  • A need – something a human baby had to have to survive

  • A want – something that helped the baby and was important, but was not essential for survival

Tudor houses - Our Great Fire of London scene

History and Design Technology

In our recent History lessons, we have been exploring the Great Fire of London, focusing on the impact it had on the city and its architecture. To enhance our understanding, the children engaged in a hands-on project where they designed and constructed their own Tudor Houses.

Prior to the building activity, we examined the distinctive features of Tudor houses that contributed to the spread of the fire. This discussion provided the foundation for the children’s designs. Using materials such as straw and hay, they created roofs that reflected the historical accuracy of the period.

To conclude their projects, the children added flames to their houses, symbolising the catastrophic events of the fire. This activity not only reinforced their learning about the Great Fire but also developed their designing and making skills in a creative and engaging manner.

Science

Does it bend or stretch?

In science this week the children explored the fascinating world of materials and their properties. They discovered whether certain materials bend or stretch, learning that these characteristics make them suitable for various purposes. To put their knowledge into practice, they conducted a fun stretch test using their socks. The children then collected their results and presented them in a paper strip bar chart, showcasing their understanding in a visual format. It was wonderful to see their enthusiasm and curiosity as they engaged in this hands-on learning experience!

Adventures in the wood

Design Technology: STEM Challenge!

Can You Build a Paper Table?

This week, we dived into the exciting world of structures! The children explored whether they could build a paper table. They investigated how to create strength and stability in their designs, just like the techniques they saw in the film. Their challenge was to construct a paper table that could support an object on top without falling over or breaking. They let their imaginations run wild as they generated ideas and discovered the amazing structures they could create.

English - Winter poem writing

Design Technology: STEM Challenge!

The children were set an exciting challenge! The task was to build the tallest tower using Lego in just 15 minutes! But there was a twist – their tower had to be sturdy enough to hold the weight of a brick.

Science - What material is this?

We've been exploring the fascinating world of materials! We've learned that everything around us is made from either natural materials or manufactured ones, and each has unique properties. It's important to use materials wisely, and many can be reused or recycled.

Remembrance Day

As a school, we came together to lay wreaths and hold a two-minute silence for Remembrance Day. It was a moving moment of reflection, allowing us to honour those who have served and sacrificed for our country. Together, we recognised the importance of remembrance in our community.

Exploring Space Non-Fiction

We looked at book covers and blurbs to decide if texts were fiction or non-fiction. Then, in small groups, we explored non-fiction texts about space, spotting features like facts, headings, and diagrams. It was fun to see how information is shared clearly!

We used this skill to complete maths problems.

Science

Lesson question: ‘How can we explore the world using our sense of touch?’

In this sensory learning lesson, children rotated through three touch stations: Feely Feet, exploring textures with their feet while blindfolded; Feely Bags, identifying hidden objects by touch; and Hot and Cold, comparing how different temperatures felt on parts of the body. These activities built teamwork, vocabulary, and observation skills in a fun, hands-on way.

Our Visit to Lanhydrock House

Today we were very lucky to visit Lanhydrock House. We explored inside the house and discovered how the family lived more than 150 years ago. In the library, we were amazed to see books that were over 400 years old!

One of our favourite parts of the visit was exploring the large kitchen and the many different rooms where food was prepared. It was fascinating to imagine what life would have been like in such a grand house.

Art and Design

Our art gallery - Autumn 1

Line and Pattern - We explored drawing different types of lines by varying control and pressure, including straight, wavy, zigzag, broken, light and dark lines.

Shape - We explored drawing and combining different geometric shapes to create our own designs.

Knowledge of Artists - We learned how artists choose materials for their properties to create different effects.

Science

In today’s lesson, we explored the question: “Is everyone’s body the same?”

To help us investigate, we created our very own life-size diagrams of our bodies. We drew an outline of a body and carefully labelled the different body parts.

We used this activity to think about similarities and differences in our bodies and what makes each of us special.

Physical Education

Physical Education with Plymouth Argyle

Harlyn are enjoying physical education sessions with coaches from Plymouth Argyle. The children are developing a wide range of skills by taking part in fun and engaging games. They are learning how to work as a team, improve coordination, and build confidence while staying active. Everyone is having a fantastic time keeping fit and learning new skills!

Science

Learning question - Are all leaves the same?

Children explored this by looking closely at their own leaf. They noticed its shape, colours, and texture — whether it was smooth, shiny, wrinkled, spiky, or soft like felt. After observing, they compared their leaf with a partner’s to discover how leaves could be the same and how they could be different.

Art and Design

Exploring the Work of Bridget Riley

Our class has been learning about the artist Bridget Riley, who is famous for her striking use of lines and optical art.

We began by practicing different types of lines:

  • Horizontal lines

  • Vertical lines

  • Diagonal lines

  • Wavy lines

  • Cross-hatched lines

  • Broken lines

Next, we experimented with string on black paper to create these different line effects. Finally, the children used chalks and oil pastels to design their own mini artworks, inspired by Bridget Riley’s style.
