Music
Intent
Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. At Camelford Primary School, we are dedicated to creating an enjoyable and engaging experience of music for all children.
By encouraging the children to participate in a variety of musical experiences, we are actively increasing their creativity, self-confidence and sense of achievement, whilst at the same time, allowing all pupils to develop their skills in music and love of music.
Music at Camelford Primary...
We ensure our children:
|
We aim to provide a music curriculum which will enable each child to be successful in reaching their full potential.
Implementation
At Camelford Primary School, our music curriculum ensures that children sing, listen, play, perform and evaluate. This is implemented in classroom activities as well as through our peripatetic lessons and music performances.
Our children experience music in many different ways:
Whole School Music
- Weekly singing assemblies, provide each phase with the opportunity to learn a wide range of songs.
- Events such as Red Nose Day, Christmas Productions, Harvest Festival and School Leavers also provide opportunities for whole school shared music making with particular songs being prepared for these special days.
Classroom Music
- In the Early Years, music is incorporated consistently into daily routines and is used to enhance teaching of the core curriculum.
- Each phase follows the Music Pathway, created by the subject lead, which cover different areas of the music curriculum.
- We use Charanga, Sing Up, Minute of Listening to support our teaching of music.
Tuition
As part of the vision for Camelford Primary, every child has an opportunity to experience instrumental playing (tuned and untuned instruments), either as an individual, in a small group or as a whole class.
- Drum tuition
- Guitar tuition
- Keyboard tuition
- Violin tuition
As well as the tuition, Cornwall Music Service Trust also provide Whole Class First Access for Ukulele, Steel Drums and Samba Drumming.
Performance Opportunities
- End of Year Music Festival
- School Productions and Performances
- Assembly performances
- Local community performances
- Yearly Celebrations, such as Songfest
Extra-curricular
Extra-curricular music includes:
- Weekly choir practice
Impact
Music enriches the lives of people, and so we wish to involve as many children as possible in musical activities. Through the rich opportunities that our music curriculum offers, when children leave Camelford Primary School they will have built a love of music and have increased levels of self-confidence. The different genres of music they are exposed to will provide great inspiration to help them with their own compositions, developing them as a listener, creator and performer.
Music Pathway
The Music pathway shows clearly what the pupils will be learning as they progress on their journey at Camelford Primary School.
At Camelford Primary School we work on a 2-year rolling programme – Year A starting Sept 2020.
The table below includes the subject coverage which details when in the year the specific topics/areas are taught. These areas have been identified by the school team from the National Curriculum and beyond – ensuring they are relevant for the pupils at Camelford Primary School.

Our End-of-Year Music Festival 2022
A huge congratulations to all of the children who performed at our Music Festival on Wednesday. It was a wonderful celebration of our musical talents at school and I am so proud of all the children! Their confidence and enjoyment was a real pleasure to see! The highlight of my year!
Enjoy this short video which shares a small selection of the wonderful performances.
Hubbub Music Festival
On Friday 17th June, the Key Stage 2 children in the school choir were provided with a great opportunity... to attend Hubbub Music Festival at Heartlands. They spent the day immersed in musical activities, such as Samba Drumming, Taiko Drumming and Gamelan music and dance. Enjoy this short video which shares different parts of this wonderful day!
Samba Drumming in Key Stage 1
During the Autumn Term 2021, Key Stage 1 classes worked with Kari Gilbert from Cornwall Music Service Trust. Each week, for 10 weeks, Kari worked with each class to use the Samba Drums to explore many musical elements, such as 'rhythm', 'pulse', 'tempo' and 'dynamics'. The children even created their own rhythms for their classmates to copy and repeat.
We hope you enjoy watching our Samba Drumming Video.
Choir Performance
The school choir were asked to perform at Camelford Senior Citizen's Christmas Lunch. They performed a range of Christmas songs and also, one of their favourites, 'Power in Me!'.
We hope you enjoy watching this performance.
