We are so excited to begin our Reception journey with you. This year will be full of learning, exploring, and discovering new things together. In Reception, we build on everything we have learnt so far and continue to grow as curious, confident, and independent learners.

Science Week!

The children have been busy learning all about space while developing their engineering skills. We started the week with a magical visit to the Wonderdome, taking an incredible journey through the stars.
We also read the story  Whatever Next, and the children had so much fun acting it out in our role play area. Some aliens even appeared in our maths work!
After watching a short clip about the recent Artemis 2 space exploration, we became engineers ourselves! The challenge: could we design a landing pod to protect an egg?

Trip to the Eden Project

What a fantastic trip we had at the Eden Project!

From being busy bees and pollinating flowers, to creating a rainbow of food and exploring the rainforest, it was a day packed with fun, learning, and adventure! Our rainforest journey even surprised us with some misty fog and a few tropical downpours which only made it feel even more real and exciting!

Spring 2- Building Bridges

Please explore our Topic Web for this term to discover all the fantastic learning adventures we have planned.

Royal Albert Bridge Trip

What an amazing trip to the Royal Albert Bridge!

The children had a fantastic time exploring and learning all about different types of bridges. They discovered the incredible work of Brunel and how he connected Cornwall and Devon — what an achievement!

After an important road safety talk, we headed out onto the bridge itself to see it up close. The children loved experiencing its structure in real life… and even felt it wobble a little as the lorries went past!

A brilliant day full of learning, curiosity, and excitement!

A walk to the town

We spent the afternoon walking through the town, exploring how it has changed over the years. The children loved hearing about what it was like years ago and comparing this to old photographs.

We then headed to the park, where we challenged ourselves to spot as many different bridges as possible and look out for signs of spring.

After some time playing in the park, we visited the post office to buy a stamp. Back at school, everyone got creative—drawing pictures, writing messages and posting their postcards.

Spring 1- Healthy Me!

We will be learning all about how to keep our bodies and minds healthy.

Please take a look at our Topic Web to find out more.

A Visit from a Nurse

We had a visit from a nurse, who talked to us about the different bones in our bodies and explained how she helps people when they are unwell.  She also showed us a range of equipment that she uses in her work, and we even had the opportunity to try on some bandages.

A trip to the local Leisure Centre

We visited the local leisure centre.  We had the opporuntity to go swimming and use the gym.  We talked about how our bodies felt during and after exercise. We know that exercise is an important part of a healthy lifestyle.

Music and Dance Performance

We all enjoyed watching an amazing music and dance performance! The performers used music and dance to retell the stories of “The Hare and the Tortoise” and “The Monkey Puzzle.” We even joined in with lots of fun dance movements, making the experience interactive and exciting!

Exploring our amazing woods

We're incredibly fortunate to have such an amazing woodland—a place where we can explore with friends, experience the changing seasons, and recently, we've been on the lookout for the first signs of autumn.

Hedgehog Homes

We explored the woodland environment and used natural resources such as leaves, twigs, and moss to create cosy hedgehog homes.

The children developed their knowledge of seasonal changes and animal behaviour, while also enhancing their creativity and fine motor skills.

This supported our understanding of hibernation, we learnt how hedgehogs prepare for winter by finding warm, safe spaces to rest.

We have been developing our gross motor skills through climbing, balancing, and exploring movement in a safe and engaging environment. Activities such as using climbing frames, balance beams, and stepping stones help build strength, coordination, and confidence.  We have been learning to assess risks, take turns, and improve our spatial awareness,
