🖐🏼 Science - Our sense of touch
How can we explore the world using our sense of touch?
This week, the children explored the world through their sense of touch. They took part in a range of exciting sensory activities, using their hands and feet to investigate different textures, temperatures and objects. They described and compared how materials felt, identified hidden objects in feely bags and explored how warm and cool objects felt on different parts of their bodies. The children developed their vocabulary as they used words such as smooth, rough, soft, hard, warm and cold to explain their discoveries.
Forest Friday
We had great fun in the forest today! The children were challenged to find five different brown items and then five different green items. They explored the woodland carefully, using their observation skills to spot a variety of natural objects. The activity encouraged discussion about colours in nature and helped the children develop their curiosity and teamwork skills.
🌍 Geography – Where I Live
This week in Geography, we have been learning about where we live. We looked at a range of maps, starting with the UK, then focusing on England, Cornwall and Camelford.
We talked about what it is like to live in Cornwall and shared some of the things we know and love about our local area.
We were then given a challenge: Can you add labels to an aerial photograph to identify different features? 📍 The children enjoyed looking carefully at the photograph and using what they had learnt to identify and label features in our local area.
We are becoming fantastic young geographers!
🎨 Art – 3D Sculptures
This week in Art, we have been learning how to use rolls of paper to create 3D structures. We looked closely at the sculptures created by Samantha Stephenson and talked about how she uses simple materials to create interesting 3D shapes.
The children then had the opportunity to become artists themselves! They used paper to design and create their own 3D sculptures, taking inspiration from Samantha Stephenson’s style. We were very impressed with their creativity and the different structures they produced!
This Week’s Books
This week, we have enjoyed sharing lots of lovely books together. Our favourite was Mrs Hick’s book! She brought in the new Gruffalo book, and we thought it was fantastic.
We especially enjoyed spotting references to lots of our other Julia Donaldson favourites throughout the story. It was great fun recognising familiar characters and stories that we already know and love!
🔬 Science – The Human Body
This week in Science, we started learning all about the human body. We learnt a new scientific word – torso – and discovered that humans are mammals.
We then worked together to label a full-size human body and a face, using scientific vocabulary. We enjoyed showing off what we already knew and learning some new words too!
Finally, we explored our five senses and looked carefully at the colour of each other’s eyes. We collected our findings and discovered that blue eyes are the most popular in our class!
What a fantastic start to our new Science topic!
🔢 Our Maths Learning This Week
This week, we have been learning how to sort objects by size and colour. We have also been practising counting out amounts from larger groups and matching our amounts to the correct number cards.
In Mastering Number, we have been learning how to use rekenreks to help us develop our understanding of numbers and counting. We have been working hard and enjoying exploring numbers in different ways! 🌟
Our Book Recommendations
Each day, one of our Year 1 children brings in a favourite book for Ms Perry to read to the class. They tell us a little bit about the story and explain why they would recommend it to their friends.
We love hearing about everyone’s book choices and discovering new stories together!
Here are the stories chosen for this week
🌟 Our First Week in Year 1 🌟
What a wonderful first full week we have had in Year 1! The children have settled in really well and are enjoying spending time with their friends and getting to know their new classroom.
We have been getting back into familiar routines such as RWI Phonics, handwriting, Maths and English, while slowly introducing some new routines too.
There has also been lots of time to ‘have a go’ and explore during our ‘busy learner time’. It has been lovely to see the children becoming confident, independent and excited about their learning!
