Science - Do all trees shed their leaves?
Do all trees shed their leaves?
During the lesson we learnt about the difference between deciduous and evergreen trees.
The children went on a leaf hunt around the school grounds and in our woods. At each tree we tried to match the leaves to the leaf ID sheet.
Design Technology
Last week we were given the task to make a mechanism that would move a spider up and down. This week we had to think about:
Science
Today we answered the lesson question: Are all leaves the same?
In order to answer the question, we had to go outside and explore our environment. We had to learn to look closely and compare leaves.
What we learnt to do:
Science week
Paper Towers - Which can hold the most amount of books?
We folded paper into tubes shaped like cuboids, cylinders and pyramids and taped them together.
We wanted to know which of the different 3D shapes would be strongest.
Harlyn guessed that the tightly wrapped ones would hold the most books, but we were all very surprised by exactly how many.
Art and Design - Colour mixing green
IALT experiment with paint mixing to make a range of secondary colours.
How could you make the green lighter? (Add more yellow paint.)
How could you make the green darker? (Add more blue paint.)
The children were given time to experiment with mixing yellow and blue. They experimented with varying the shade (or hue) of green they made, using different quantities of blue and yellow paint each time.
Science - What is waterproofing?
We carried out a fair test to see which material would be the most waterproof.
We covered three of the umbrellas with a layer of (vegetable) oil, pva glue and wax crayon. The last umbrella was left with nothing. We then predicted what would happen. After that, we added a few drops of water onto each umbrella before testing and discussing the results. Which umbrella was most waterproof?
English - The Three Little Pigs
Over the last few weeks we have been reading and learning the story of The Three Little Pigs.
We used a story map and talk for writing to practice retelling the story everyday. We especially enjoyed putting actions to the story.
We used the story to write our own stories based on The Three Little Pigs.
Science
What happens when we squash, bend, twist or stretch a material?
Geography
How does the daily weather change?
Forecasting the weather - today we have watched the weather forecast for the South West. We then looked on the BBC weather page and looked at the weather forecast for Camelford. On the forecast for Camelford we noticed they had used symbols to tell us what the weather would be like for the rest of the week. We then had to learn what all these symbols meant.
The children then used the symbols and a map of the UK to present their own weather forecasts.
Computing
Learning to use a digital devise to take photographs.
When is it OK to take someone’s photo?
- Taking photos can be lots of fun, but not everyone wants to be in them.
- Before taking anyone’s photo, you should ask them if it’s OK. If they say that it is OK, you can take it.
- If they say they don’t want to, find someone else to take a photo of!
How do you take a good photograph?
1.Hold the device firmly with both hands.
2.Point the camera lens at the subject.
3.Look into the viewing window or screen.
4.Move the device until you see everything clearly.
5.Press the capture button.

A big welcome
Welcome to a new school year. We have had a busy day in Harlyn today, we have been establishing lots of new routines and getting to know our new classroom.
We read the story ‘The Colour Monster goes to School’ and used the story to discuss our feelings and that if we have a worry there are safe adults in the class we can talk to. In the afternoon we had some time to explore the classroom and spend time playing with our friends.
