To develop observational drawing skills

  • I can recognise and describe shapes in an object to start a drawing.
  • I can look carefully to add details.
  • I can use mark-making techniques to add texture.

Maths - Comparing 2-digit numbers using base 10 and numicon

Identify and name some common trees

In our science lesson we have been learning to recognise and name some common trees. We are very lucky to have our own woods on the school grounds so we went on a walk to our woods using the Tree Key to try to identify trees. Which Tree Is It?

Science - Observing plants and discussing parts of a plant

Music

Computing - Robot algorithms

We are learning how to give clear instructions.  We are also learning how to use instructions to create algorithms to programme a sequence on a floor robot.

Musical activities in the hall

Maths - IALT find a half

IALT develop ideas and apply craft skills when printmaking.

We painted ink on top of your tile.

We drew a section of our maps with pencils onto a polystyrene sheet tile.

We put all out prints together to create one large picture.

Eden Project - Exploring the Tropical Biome

Eden Project Workshop - Ready Steady Sow

3D Art work

Learning how to use Scratch Jr

The children learnt how to set a background and to code sprites to race across the screen.

Can you name the capital cities of the UK?

In our Geography lesson we have been learning about the Countries that make up the UK. This week we have been thinking about the four capital cities.

Maths - IALT count in 2s

Learning to count in 2s, 5s and 10s from 0.

Art and design

Spring 2 learning

Weighing

Celebrating World Book Day

Design Technology

Practising our running stitches.

Making a clay stepping stone

Computing - digital writing

Using the spacebar to leave gaps between words.

Learning how to use the keyboard to write a simple sentence.

We learnt how to use the delete button to remove any mistakes.

St Piran's Day

We all went into the hall and had a great big cream tea altogether. We learnt about St Piran and how he travelled to Cornwall.

We learnt how to say 'hello', 'thank you' and 'please' in Cornish. We are now saying hello in Cornish when we take the register.

We made Cornish flags.

Art - Woven Wonders

This unit has focused on developing the children's abilities to express opinions about art, use creative techniques like wool wrapping and weaving, and understand the work of artists like Cecilia Vicuña. It emphasised skills such as measuring, choosing materials, and resilience in artistic creation.

Weather Forecasting

We have been learning about how to forecast the weather. We watched the BBC weather forecast for Camelford and had a go at being weather presenters.

Art and Design

We have been learning to choose, measure, arrange and fix materials.

Judith Scott - She is an artist that uses wool to create sculptures and pictures. We learnt how to use wool to create pieces of artwork like Judith Scott.

Computing

We have been learning to make choices when taking a photograph.

How do we capture a good photograph?

We can hold the camera in two ways: upright or sideways

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

All our work based on The Great Fire of London

Completed Tudor Houses with a few flames

Creating Tudor Houses from 1666

Can you build a paper table?

Learning to explore creating strength and stability within structures in order to generate ideas.

Can you build a paper table using the techniques you saw in the film? Can they support an object on top of your structure without it falling over or breaking?

The Great Fire of London

Exploring creating strength and stability within structures

Who can make the tallest tower using Lego? It has to be able to hold the weight of a brick!

Why did the Great Fire burn down so many buildings?

The children had to rank the paper according to how transparent it was.

Science

Uses of everyday materials.

What is paper?  How strong is it?

Exploring how structures work and what they are used for

Who can make the strongest bridge between two chairs using only paper and masking tape? who can make the strongest bridge between two chairs using only paper and masking tape?

Can you build a bridge for a monster?

Building structures

Can you build a structure with paper?

How can we work out why the Great Fire started?

Observational Drawing

To complete our science work on autumn and art work on drawing we drew pictures of autumn objects.

We discussed which ingredients we would need to make our apples crumbles.

We used our fairy fingers to rub together the butter and flour to create breadcrumbs. We then sprinkled the crumble mixture over the sliced apples.

We peeled and chopped the apples into slices.

Making apple crumbe

After we had cooked and cooled our crumbles we got to taste them. They were amazing!

Drawing from observation

Applying their drawing skills and knowledge to create an observational drawing experimenting with marks and materials.

Harvesting Apples

This week the Reception children have been out harvesting the apples.

Next week we are going to use our senses to investigate what they are like.

We managed to collect lots and lots. We now have enough to make apple crumble!

Mark making

Exploring mark making through observational drawing, developing an understanding of mark making techniques and learning to look carefully when drawing.

Physical Education

Year 1 learning 'greater than', 'less than' and 'equals'

Making bread

The Reception children helped the Little Red Hen to make bread.

Science - Seasons

Year 1 are learning all about seasons in their science lessons. As part of this work the children went on a autumn walk around the school.

The chidlren found lots of different types of nuts.

Autumn treasures.

The children used the items they found to create autumn pictures.

Sequencing the story of The Little Red Hen

Retelling the story using story language

Music lesson

Learning our Harvest song with Miss Perrett.

The children really enjoyed listening to Miss Perrett play the keyboard.

Learning maths outside

The reception children have been taking their learning of maths outside.

They were great at matching natural objects to numbers 1 to 10.

Gross motor development

Looking for natural objects

Learning in the woods

Practicing our scissors skills

Art: Exploring line

Our finished designs. We put them together to create one large picture in the style of Bridget Riley.

I am learning how to create different types of lines.

As a class we explored the work of the artist Bridget Riley. We then used wool to create different lines.

We used chalk to create our own designs.

Our first day altogether

Exploring our school environment

A big welcome to everyone

Today Harlyn came together as a whole class. Our lovely new Reception children enjoyed settling in to their new environment; meeting old friends and making lots of new ones and learning the rules and routines of Reception life.

They particularly loved being outside on the field in the sunshine with the rest of the school. They also enjoyed exploring both classrooms and taking part in Busy Learner time where they got to choose what they wanted to do.

Year 1 were super helpful and supported us with settling our new Reception into life in Harlyn.
